In 2008, I was asked this question. Being the analytic thinker that I am, I considered it earnestly. As I did, I realized this question identified two things that hold back many endeavors in life: fear of failure and a lack of resources. But when worry about those things is removed, one is able to focus on their gifts and passions, resulting in endless opportunity for leverage and positive impact.
Three things came quickly to mind as I actively removed the worry and thought about my gifts and passions: creativity, flowers, and serving others in need.
I have always been creative - ever since I was little. Drawing, building, painting, shaping… anything that involved using my hands. This tendency was encouraged by both my parents, individually 'makers-of-things' in their own right. I guess you could say that designing was in my blood.
I LOVE flowers... Not only are flowers beautiful to look at, they play a huge role in our vast ecosystem, and have been used in a myriad of ways for centuries. So, whether they are bright and playful like the poppy (my favorite)... soft and sophisticated like the peony... or bold and distinctive like the protea, it makes no difference to me. I love them all!
I am a Christ follower. I believe that everything I have, including my skill, is due to God's generous provision. I believe the best way to show my thankfulness for those skills is to use them so that others might benefit, giving God all the glory.
So, if money were no obstacle and I could not fail, my answer to this question is simple. I would glorify God and leverage my gifts and passions by serving others with excellence in the area of floral design, and create positive social impact by donating a portion of my profit to charitable organizations and those in need.
This is why, in 2009, Glory Floral Designs, LLC was formed. However small or large the endeavor might be, I strongly believe in sharing the gifts and passions I have been given and not letting fear stand in the way.
“For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen “ - Romans 11:36
